That Lucky Old Sun (with Willie Nelson)

by Beasley Smith, Haven Gillespie

from the album Lucky Old Sun

Lyrics

(Kenny)
Up in the morning
Out on the job
Work like the devil for my pay
But that lucky old sun ain’t got nothing to do
But roll around heaven all day

(Willie)
I fuss with my woman
I toil for my kids
And I sweat til I’m wrinkled and gray
But that lucky old sun ain’t got nothing to do
But roll around heaven all day

(Kenny)
Dear Lord above can’t you see I’m crying
Tears are in my eyes
Send down a cloud with a silver lining
Take me to paradise

(Willie)
Show me that river
Lead me across
And take all my troubles away

(Kenny)
Like that lucky old sun, I’ll have nothing to do
But roll around heaven all day

(Willie)
Lord above can’t you see I’m crying
Tears are in my eyes

(Kenny)
Send down a cloud with a silver lining
Take me to paradise

(Willie)
Show me that river
Lead me across
And take all my troubles away

(Kenny)
Like that lucky old sun, I’ll have nothing to do

(Willie)
But roll around heaven all day

(Kenny)
Roll around heaven all day

Kenny’s Note

What can I say that would do this song justice? What do I say about Willie Nelson to do him justice? I can say that so many days, I’ve just sat on the bow of my boat, watching the sun move across the sky and listened to the ocean swells beat against the boat. There were a couple of months last year where I did just that: lived on my boat, and it really did feel like I was just rolling around heaven all day. That kind of feeling will stick with you.
