Legendary Tennessee Vols play-by-play man John Ward died on Wednesday at the age of 87. As a retirement send-off in 1998, Kenny Chesney recorded and released the single “Touchdown Tennessee.”

He was the iconic ‘Voice of the Vols’ across the state, covering Tennessee Vols basketball for 34 seasons and Tennessee Vols football for 31 seasons. With the program approaching its 20th sports year since his retirement, John Ward died at age 87.

The Vol Network announced Ward’s passing on Wednesday evening. Chris Lowe of ESPN reported that he was battling a lengthy illness.

A star in his own right on Rocky Top, Ward was memorable for his objective play-calling and numerous exciting sayings. Everybody from Memphis to Johnson City could hear his words.

“It’s football time in Tennessee!”

“He’s at the 35, 30, 25, 20, 15, 10, 5…Give Him Six! Touchdown, Big Orange!”

Ward called basketball games from Ray Mears through Jerry Green. He called football games from Doug Dickey through Phillip Fulmer. And it was only fitting that the final Tennessee Vols football game he called was in 1998.

“5, 4, 3, 2, 1…the national champion, is clad in Big Orange!”

Billboard has released their list of the highest paid musicians of 2015 and Kenny Chesney comes in at #2 with $39.8 million.

Of 40 musicians calculated by Billboard, eight are country artists — nine if you include Taylor Swift. While Swift ranks No. 1 as the overall top earner of 2015, Kenny Chesney comes in second place, with Luke Bryan rounding out the Top 10 country earners in the seventh position.

Meanwhile, Shania Twain, Jason Aldean and Florida Georgia Line rank Top 20, and Brad Paisley and Toby Keith fall in the Top 30 as highest earners. A complete breakdown is below.

Swift brought in $73.5 million in revenue last year thanks to her ever successful 1989 World Tour. Chesney earned $39.8 million last year after taking a hiatus from the road in 2014. The majority of his income, $38.1 million, came from playing for his adoring No Shoes Nation of fans.

Kenny Dishes on The Upcoming Tour

2016 is here and that means we’re only about 3 months away from the first Kenny Chesney show of the year. Here’s a little preview of what to expect on the Spread The Love Tour:

“So this year, we are as lean as we’ve ever been! The stage is clean. Nobody’s flying,” Kenny says. “The sound is building on last year’s incredible system – and the lights are going to be really focused on making the music stand out. I want as little between me and the fans as possible, and I think we’ve managed to achieve that in a really good way.”

He adds that while the tour will be “more intense than ever,” his focus remains on the songs themselves.

“It’s going to be about the songs, the band, the moment and the energy we give each other,” the “Save It For a Rainy Day” singer goes on to say. “This is going to be a year to remember… and we’ve not played the first note.”

As expected, Kenny Chesney will return to Gillette Stadium next summer as part of his Spread The Love Tour. The show with Miranda Lambert, Sam Hunt, and Old Dominion will take place on August 26th.

“We have had so many special nights at Gillette,” Chesney says in a press release. “Every single one has been its own set of memories … and when we go back this year, I want to know we are going to have the night that tops all the ones that have come before. The people in and around Boston are amazing, and I want to live up to all the energy they give us.

“Even before we started playing stadiums in 2005, Boston was special,” he continues. “They really listen to the songs … They really rock hard when you put it out there … Those are some kind of fans, and when we get there, I know it’s going to be the kind of night worth waiting all summer for.”

Ticket information will be available soon.
