Payton’s surgically repaired left leg was still in a bulky brace after taking a crippling hit on the Saints’ third offensive play during last week’s loss to Tampa Bay. The Superdome’s coaching booth is barely equipped to handle able-bodied legs, so Payton’s inflexible peg leg had to be propped up on a chair more than likely. Everything about the situation reeked of uncomfortableness, and then came kickoff.

Payton wasn’t able to leave the press box with the injury, which he knew would be the case going into the game. So Payton chowed down a hot dog and then his good buddy, country music star Kenny Chesney, joined him to pass the time. (Yes, that really happened.)

Coach Frank Spaziani assembled the team at 9:45 a.m. and played Chesney’s music video “The Boys of Fall,” which chronicles the emotion involved with the game of football. At the conclusion of the video, Spaziani surprised the team by introducing Chesney, who received a standing ovation.

Chesney spoke to the team about the importance of personal sacrifice and sacrifice as a team in order to achieve goals. Spaziani presented Chesney with a Boston College football jersey and hat.

Avid football fan Kenny Chesney stopped by the New York Jets’ training camp today, to hang with Coach Rex Ryan and several of his players. Kenny is in New Jersey to play an already history-making show at the Meadowlands Stadium, where the Jets play. Uncle Kracker, Billy Currington and Zac Brown Band are also on tomorrow night’s (August 13) bill, which is the biggest single-ticket country show in the New York City/New Jersey area since 1983, when Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard and Linda Ronstadt drew more than 51,000 concertgoers to their joint show in the area.

ESPN has ordered high school makeover show Rise Up to series and the network has enlisted country music star Kenny Chesney to write the theme song for the franchise.

Hosted by ESPN college football analyst Chris Spielman and DIY television personality Deanne Bell (PBS’ Design Squad), Rise Up gives needy high schools’ athletic facilities a makeover. The franchise bowed with a backdoor pilot last fall at New Orleans’ McMain Secondary High School. ESPN is currently in production on new installments in Boston, Seattle, Chicago and Wellston, Ohio, while executives hope to expand the series to six yearly installments in 2012.

The series kicks off Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. with Wellston High School.

Joan Lynch, Rise Up executive producer and ESPN’s vp of content development, describes Chesney’s new song – an acoustic number titled “Rise Up” – as “a call to action.”

It’s the first time Chesney has been asked to compose a song for television, says Lynch. “He said to me, ‘Joan, this is the hardest thing I’ve done.’ And then he watched the [New Orleans episode of Rise Up] and he wrote the song in two hours. I couldn’t believe it when he emailed me the lyrics.”
