“American Kids” Most-Added New Song

Kenny Chesney knew he had something special when he heard “American Kids,” but he didn’t think he’d hit the kind of nerve the decidedly icon-invoking tribute to being young and alive in the U.S. has struck. Hitting radio Friday, June 20 at 6 a.m. and iTunes at 7 p.m., the first single from Chesney’s eagerly anticipated fall release debuted at #27 on Billboard and #31 on Country Aircheck/Mediabase. With little more than two days play, it topped iTunes Country Songs chart and hit the all-genre Top 10 over the weekend.

“I knew it was one of the freshest things in a long time when I heard it,” says the songwriter from Luttrell, Tennessee. “And then I heard it on the radio, and I couldn’t believe how great it sounded! ‘American Kids’ sounded as freewheeling and free-spirited as the folks I’m singing about… and no matter how old you are, I promise, unless you were one of those kids who just didn’t like fun, you know just how alive this feels.”

Bowing on NoShoesRadio.com at 6 a.m., mainstream radio took up the single – and by chart close Monday, 116 stations added the song. But beyond (un)conventional media, the song is making its way virally. Myriad covers are hitting the internet, including Angie Keilhauer, whose driving, smoky rendition caught Chesney’s eye. “It’s crazy what’s going on with it,” Chesney laughs. “People feel just like I do about this song. They love how it makes them feel, where it takes them in their life. You don’t need a big party to have fun, it’s right where you are and how you take it.

With a chorus that contains the salvo: “a little messed up, but we’re all alright,” the Shane McAnally/Luke Laird/Rodney Clawson song mines three rhythms, two works and so many iconics you can’t count’ em. But what can be measured is the smile-induction factor. For Chesney, who’s been creating trends rather than following them since his breakthrough No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems and When the Sun Goes Down, he was seeking something that was fun but didn’t sacrifice innovative songs or unique approach that have seen him teaming with Dave Matthews, Uncle Kracker, the Wailers and Grace Potter on a series of outside the lines #1s.

“I never want to repeat myself,” laughs the man The Wall Street Journal deemed “The King of the Road” about his upcoming project. “When you’ve had the kind of songs I’ve been able to find, it gets harder every time. But I believe creativity is something you create – with time, passion and talented friends! I hate not playing to the fans this summer, but the response to ‘American Kids’ tells me it was the right thing.”

“American Kids” celebrates how people live, capturing the details, realities and euphoria that defines being wildly alive.

“American Kids” can be heard in full below, or catch it on No Shoes Radio each hour all day long.

“When I heard it, I knew I was gonna cut it,” Chesney says in a press release. “It was unlike anything I’d ever heard –- and I listen to a lot of songs. The rhythms, the images, the way the melody moved… It just grabs you and holds on, but even more importantly, it feels really good.”

“Hey, life is hard,” Chesney reflects. “People work long hours, have all kinds of stuff going on in their personal lives. But if there’s one thing I’ve seen over the last 10 years, looking out at the faces in the crowd: you can’t keep my fans down. These are people who no matter what are in love with life, and they’re gonna find the good times no matter what.”

“When I See This Bar” Is Most Added Song in Country Radio

Kenny Chesney released his next single “When I See This Bar” last week and country radio made it the most added song:

“I think it’s happened to everybody,” he said. “You walk into a place where you really came of age, and you look around and realize that nobody there knows anything but all that happened there with you and your friends. But for you, it’s all still so real: right in that moment, right in that place. All the memories rush back – all the fun, all the crazy stuff you did, all the lessons and heartbreaks.

“Having played it for people since the record came out, I started to realize: what’s so incredibly personal for me is just as personal to every one I’ve played it for,” he continued. “Only they all have a very specific bar where it happened to them! Hung out with friends, fell in love, fell apart – and that’s why I figured this did make sense as a single.”

Kenny Chesney will perform at New York City’s Highline Ballroom for an exclusive, invitation-only concert for SiriusXM listeners on Wednesday, May 1.

The “Early Kick Off to Summer” concert, which will be broadcast on Saturday, May 4 at 8:00 pm ET on The Highway, channel 59, will feature the only artist to sell in excess of a million tickets on each of his last ten tours, performing several of his 24 number one hits, as well as songs from the largely self-penned Life On A Rock, which also features guest appearances from Willie Nelson and the Wailers Band and is scheduled to be released on April 30.

“To be able to strip it down and create the same kind of vibe that reflects this new record makes me really fired up,” says Chesney. “It’s tricky when you do the kinds of shows we do to take it into a venue small enough for this music to be heard properly… and I love the idea that not just the few hundred who get in, but everyone listening to SiriusXM’s The Highway will be able to be part of this very special night of songs and stories.”

Subscribers will have the opportunity to win tickets to the event through an online sweepstakes across SiriusXM’s diverse music, talk and sports channels open to listeners who have been an active subscriber continuously since March 18 and meet certain other conditions of eligibility. See Official Rules at www.siriusxm.com/thehighway starting April 3.

SiriusXM listeners can also enter for the chance to win a trip to New York City for the event by following @SXMTheHighway on Twitter and watching for the opportunity to enter to win. See Official Rules for additional details about this opportunity at www.siriusxm.com/thehighway beginning April 16.

SiriusXM subscribers, who have been an active subscriber continuously since March 18, can also enter for the chance to win one of five pairs of tickets for the event by listening to The Highway, channel 59, on Wednesday April 3, at 4:00 pm ET.
