The Tampa Bay Times has a review of the show: “Kenny Chesney goes big all night in Trip Around the Sun Tour opener at Tampa’s Raymond James Stadium”

You could drop all kinds of stats trying to size up Kenny Chesney’s Trip Around the Sun Tour, which launched its 2018 run at Tampa’s Raymond James Stadium Saturday night.

There’s the end zone-swallowing stage, 180 tons thick and half a skyscraper high. There were the 55,292 fans who essentially sold the place out, and the crew in the hundreds it took to make the whole train go.

But Chesney himself might just direct your eyes to the north end of the stadium, where he had the Buccaneers’ pirate ship draped in a sail-sized skull-and-bones flag tatted with the words NO SHOES NATION.

Yep: For his first Tampa show in five years, the country superstar commandeered one of the city’s iconic structures and branded it in his own image, like everything else in his increasingly Buffett-like empire.

“Five years is too long to stay away from Tampa Bay, and for that, I apologize,” Chesney told the masses. “But, if all you people let me tonight — let me and my band and my road family — we’re gonna take you by the hand, and we’re gonna make love to you all night! And I promise we will make up for all five years we did not come here!”

It was personal for Chesney, kicking this tour off in Florida. Ever since Hurricane Irma ripped through his beloved Keys and Virgin Islands last fall, he’s been an active advocate for relief and recovery. He spent most of the week here rehearsing, and was rewarded with his largest audience ever at RayJay.

Kenny Chesney and his crew have been gearing up for the kickoff of the 2018 Trip Around The Sun Tour:

It will take 19 buses and 28 trucks to make Kenny Chesney’s next tour happen.

Chesney will use the biggest video screen he’s ever used for his concerts, measuring 48 feet wide by 36 feet tall.

The configuration for his sound system was recently used at a New Orleans festival, and it had enough intensity to set off car alarms 500 feet away.

Chesney says he probably will not crank it up that high, but it’s nice to know he could.

The tour kicks off this weekend in Tampa. View the full tour schedule and get tickets!

Kenny Chesney opened the 53rd annual Academy of Country Music Awards on Sunday night (April 15) with the live television debut performance of new single, “Get Along,” which will appear on his upcoming 18th album.

Chesney owned the crowd, performing in the middle of the venue while his band played on the main stage. Rocking a laid-back outfit including his signature cowboy hat, the country legend looked enthusiastic as he belted the tune’s hopeful lyrics. “Get along on down the road / We’ve got a long, long way to go / Scared to live, scared to die / We ain’t perfect, but we try,” he sung. The star is no stranger the the awards show: he’s took home the Entertainer of the Year Award five times throughout his career.

“Get Along” was co-written by Shane MacAnally and Josh Osborne, who are also nominated for Songwriter of the Year at this year’s ACMs. The song marks Chesney’s first release since signing with Warner Music Nashville earlier this year after his longtime relationship with Sony Music.

Chesney to Drop New Single on Friday

Kenny Chesney is dropping his next single, “Get Along,” on Friday:

Per the release, “Get Along” was written by Shane McAnally, Ross Copperman and Josh Osborne and is the first song off what’s described as Chesney’s “most personal album to date.” The mid-tempo track invites listeners to, as its title says, get along with others and find a way to live peacefully and in harmony.

“Some days, it’s like the world is just angry, screaming people, all harping on what’s wrong, how other people are awful. The more I move around, talking to people, though, the more I know people are seeking the same things, working hard to get by and hoping for the best for their family and friends,” Chesney says in the press release. “It’s simple, but we keep getting driven apart — and made unhappy.”

Lyrics of “Get Along” include “Get along on down the road / We’ve got a long, long way to go / Scared to live, scared to die / We ain’t perfect, but we try …;” the song invites listeners to “paint a wall, learn to dance, call your mom, buy a boat, drink a beer, sing a song, make a friend.” Chesney says he was drawn to “how good the rhythm felt,” but also to how McAnally, Copperman and Osborne “broke all this stuff down” in the song’s lyrics.

“To me, music is what you make it, and I want music that sounds good, but also gives you permission to really live. I think we can get so caught up in expectations, our own and other people’s, and we forget what matters,” Chesney says. “You know, the song says, ‘You find out when you die, the keys to heaven can’t be bought / We still don’t know what love is, but we sure know what it’s not …’ That’s real. We’re here such a short time, this song reminds us all how to get together, get along and enjoy the ride.”
