As we near Christmas, CMT dishes on Kenny Chesney and his favorite holiday song:

It makes total sense that the East Tennessee native loves the song [Christmas in Dixie] so much. It’s the perfect illustration of the environment that molded and shaped him, set against the backdrop of the most festive and nostalgic time of year.

“Growing up in the South, I can just remember hearing that a lot,” Chesney said. “I mean every Christmas, you heard Alabama. You heard Randy Owen singing ‘Christmas in Dixie.’ It’s just one of those songs that my hometown radio station played every year. I always remember loving that song.”

Once he got into the music business, Chesney became friends with Owen and his Alabama bandmates. In fact, Owen provided guest vocals when Chesney recorded a version of “Christmas in Dixie” for his 2003 album, All I Want for Christmas Is a Real Good Tan.

“They just mean so much to me,” Chesney said. “And to have Randy come in and lend his voice to one of my records was just an awesome feeling — something I will be able to have forever. It’s pretty cool.”

Shot during a break on Chesney’s 2013 No Shoes Nation Tour, “Spread the Love” is the antithesis of 19 NFL stadiums and 1.25 million fans. Instead of the centrifugal force of Chesney’s road life, the clip documents Chesney with Barrett, Alvin “Secco” Patterson and the rest of the Wailers Band, as well as capturing Hope House, Tuff Gong Studios and the myriad faces and places on the island.

“It was important to me to seek the heart of what those men represent,” Chesney says of the clip. “The tremendous love in the Wailers’ music, and hope against often unthinkable odds. In spite of the hardships, Bob Marley was always about hope… and love… and that is what makes this music endure. If this video can give people a glimpse of where it comes from, the things that is made of, then I think we’ve deepened what ‘Spread the Love’ is about, and reminded people of the amazing men who created these songs.”
