Kenny Chesney will perform his new song “When I See This Bar” on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno tonight (7/22).

“There are some things that just are,” Chesney says. “The friendships you make along the way, the places you’ve been… and even though they change, they remain the same in your mind. That is very much what ‘When I See This Bar’ is all about, and I think for a whole lot of people, that’s what Jay Leno and ‘The Tonight Show’ have meant, too.”

“What this album is, what Jay Leno means,” Chesney says, “makes me glad we can go play ‘When I See This Bar’ somewhere that its meaning makes sense. They have a lot of great music that’s been there, a lot of great friendships and fun, and that’s everything ‘When I See This Bar’ is all about”.

The Tonight Show airs on NBC at 11:30 ET.

At the stroke of midnight, Kenny Chesney released the music video for his latest single, “When I See This Bar,” at USAtoday.com:

Chesney calls When I See This Bar, which he wrote with Keith Gattis, “a journal entry that rhymed,” and he wanted the song’s video to have the same sort of simplicity. So When I See This Bar, premiering at USA TODAY, features footage and stills from the country singer’s life in the Virgin Islands.

“It’s got a lot of my life in it, a lot of the friends I met down in the islands back even before I started building my life as I know it now,” says the native of Luttrell, Tenn., who spends most of his time off the road in the Virgin Islands. “Like the song, there’s a lot of life in this video, and it’s got a lot of people who inspired me in the ways they lived their lives.”

Chesney shot the video for his current top-20 single at some of his favorite spots in the Virgin Islands, as well as during rehearsals for his 2013 No Shoes Nation Tour, which takes him to Salt Lake City tonight and to Denver’s Sports Authority Field at Mile High on Saturday.

“I went back to a couple of these old bars and sat with me and a guitar,” Chesney says. The older footage comes from “back when we used to have the camcorders that flipped out, before you could make a movie on your phone” and features many longtime friends and figures that played key roles in his life.

“This video probably has more of my life and more of my heart — and we spent less on it — than anything I’ve ever done,” he says.

Head over to USA Today to watch the video.

“When I See This Bar” Video Debuting Soon

Kenny Chesney will debut the music video for his latest single “When I See This Bar” on July 18th!

When Kenny started thinking about debuting the intimate and deeply personal video for “When I See This Bar,” he knew he wanted to take the clip somewhere that wasn’t obvious. The largely man and his guitar performance piece is filled by locations he knows by heart, and the fact almost everyone has these same places in their own lives, he wanted to premiere where anyone who’s ever had friends, grown up, lost people they cared about and celebrated their little victories could experience the clip.

USA Today seemed the only option. Having already hailed “Pirate Flag” as their Song of the Week before Life On a Rock’s first single was even released and devoting an entire page to the mechanics of a stadium show in 2005, Chesney has always see the paper as a place where America finds its news. On July 18, USA Today will also be the place America can find “When I See This Bar,” which is already top 20 on the country singles charts and climbing.

“I think people, whether they’re country fans, music fans or just alive, all have a place like this, a place where they grew up, fell in love, learned to move on,” Chesney says. “You may never go back there, or only go back as a pilgrimage to who you were and how much you’ve grown… But that place? That place is always alive in your heart.”

Shot on location in the Virgin Islands and in rehearsals for his 2013 No Shoes Nation Tour, “When I See This Bar” captures the man beyond the footlights. Interwoven with pictures of his years and friends in the islands, footage of ad libbed late night bar jams and moments that are long gone, Chesney sought to offer up the “boy coming into his own” from the song co-written with Keith Gattis.

“It doesn’t matter where I go, everybody I talk to has that bar,” explains Chesney. “When I was in college, we had a bar we went to that first week, and it was where we all had one last beer before we graduated… The people who read USA Today, they’re just like me and my friends. They know this journey, so I was happy the editors wanted to team with us for this video’s premiere.”

Forbes Article on Chesney’s Rum

Forbes has a great article on Kenny Chesney’s new rum:

“I spend a lot of my time off the road down in the Virgin Islands,” he says. “If I was going to create a rum, which is my drink of choice … I wanted it to be authentic, to try to capture my life in the islands.”

Chesney has certainly taken pains to follow through on that promise. He personally traveled to Barbados in February to sit down with a mixologist at the West Indies Rum Distillery, which was established in 1893 and now bottles brands like Malibu and Cockspur rum at a capacity of 150,000 cases per year.

He returned to his home in Tennessee with three unmarked bottles and an urge to get cracking on design, marketing and distribution. He brought in Nashville firm Flo to help with those efforts–and Chesney, who pulled in an estimated $53 million over the past 12 months, funded the entire project himself (when asked if he shelled out down seven figures, he replied: “Times a couple.”)

“I own it 100%,” he says of Blue Chair Bay. “It was important to me, it’s my inspiration, my story. It’d be hard to share that with anyone else.”

Remarkably enough, Chesney’s rum was ready in time for his show at Cowboy Stadium in May. The combination of hard work and a self-reliant approach has boosted the singer’s already-vaunted status in the country world.

Though country artists traditionally haven’t produced as many brand extensions as, say, hip-hop, Chesney and his peers may be starting to change that. Keith Urban and Blake Shelton have branched out into television, while top-earner Toby Keith launched a mescal line in 2011 and a restaurant chain in 2005. (“I don’t pay attention to those things,” says Chesney. “I try to take care of my business.”)

Like just about any startup, Blue Chair Bay likely won’t be profitable immediately. But perhaps not too far on that seaside horizon, there are hefty rewards to be reaped. And Chesney is happy to wait.

“The business of rum is not like a record,” he says. “Typically you’re going to do a third of your business with the first week of a record. Rum doesn’t work like that, it trickles out little by little … I want to do more than get my money back.”
