Background on Kenny’s New Documentary

Kenny Chesney’s second documentary, “The Color Orange: The Condredge Holloway Story,” will debut this Sunday, and ESPN has a look at how it came together:

Chesney was approached to do the movie after ESPN executives saw a scene in Chesney’s recent documentary “The Boys of Fall” in which Chesney was talking with Holloway. ESPN saw the great rapport between the two and asked Chesney to do a whole new show about the relationship. Chesney immediately came on board. Holloway heard about the project and said, “As long as Kenny is in charge of it, I’ll do it.”

So the two collaborated and created the documentary to talk about their relationship and life as a Tennessee Volunteer in the early 1970s. There is no bigger fan of the Volunteers than Chesney.

“As kids, we’d watch Holloway on TV and then try to do what he did. It didn’t matter that he was black. Yes, I know there were race issues all over, but not in my family and friends,” Chesney said. “I didn’t have a grandfather who said, ‘Why do you like this guy?’ I even wore his jersey for a school picture. My teachers, my school — we all loved Condredge.”

Kenny will premiere the movie in Knoxville on Wednesday:

“It’s like going back and seeing all my idols. I’m going to have a lot of goose bumps,” said Chesney, who used to wear Holloway’s No. 7 tear-away jersey while playing as a kid. “I have many musical heroes, but going back as a kid, my heroes played for the Tennessee Volunteers. It’s going to be a special night.”

The documentary will air this Sunday on ESPN at 8 pm.

Chesney Honored at Sports Hall of Fame Banquet

On Friday night in Nashville, Kenny Chesney was honored along with 10 other sports figures from the state at the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame induction banquet. Kenny kept a low profile to not take away the spotlight from the other inductees:

The four-time Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year insisted on not taking attention from the 11 inductees. He waited until well into the meal before slipping in. He would not speak to reporters or allow his picture to be taken inside the banquet room.

He turned down the customary seat reserved at the head table and his acceptance speech was brief.

“He said, ‘We’re not doing a red-carpet affair,’ ” said Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame executive director Ryland Hoskins, who was surprised when Hall of Fame President Bill Emendorfer named him Tennessean of the Year along with Chesney. “Kenny was very appreciative of the honor, but he did not want to take the limelight away from any of our inductee honorees. He said he just wanted to be one in the crowd.”

Chesney, a Knoxville native and longtime UT fan, sat at a table with former Vols quarterback Condredge Holloway, who was there as a guest. The former Gibbs High football player told the crowd that sports taught him to dream big when he was growing up.
