It’s been 14 years since Kenny Chesney’s first number one hit (“When I Close My Eyes”), and this week “The Boys of Fall” becomes his 20th number one.
Kenny said: “I was on a photo shoot in Puerto Rico when I had my first #1 record with ‘When I Close My Eyes.’ When I heard today that ‘The Boys of Fall’ became my 20th #1, it made me very happy to know the feeling is the same.”
Congrats Kenny!

Kenny Chesney has already said he’s going to play “60-ish” shows next year, and in a web chat today at ESPN.com he revealed that he’ll be hitting up stadiums again in 2011:
Jennifer (Hancock, MN): So how many stadiums are you planning to play in 2011?
Kenny Chesney: We’re still finalizing the tour, but it will be several.
Our forum member katieayers11 also got to ask Kenny a question. She asked: “what was it like to practice with the New Orleans Saints?”
Kenny responded: “It was a dream come true to be in the huddle with Brees, Bush, Shockey and all those guys. Sean Payton is a good friend of mine and he allowed me to do that. It was a huge thrill to run out and catch passes from Drew Brees. It was awesome.”
Kenny Chesney will be all over your television today, the day before his new album Hemingway’s Whiskey is released. He’ll make appearances on ESPN multiple times and the premier of CMT Invitation Only airs tonight.
The ESPN studios will host Kenny for most of the day and he’ll appear on several different programs, including SportsCenter, Sports Nation, ESPNU, NFL Live, CFB Live, and will do a live chat on ESPN.com. And tonight, Kenny Chesney’s documentary The Boys of Fall will re-air at 7 pm ET on ESPN2.
At 10 pm ET, CMT’s “Invitation Only” with Chesney will debut. He’ll play several songs off the new album, including “The Boys of Fall”, “Coastal”, “You and Tequila”, and “Hemingway’s Whiskey.” He also answers questions from fans that were in attendance at the August taping in Nashville.
And don’t miss Kenny on Good Morning America tomorrow where he’ll perform and be interviewed!
David Green of NPR has a good interview with Kenny Chesney that mainly focuses on the new album Hemingway’s Whiskey, but also hits on a couple other topics including the July 2000 police horse incident:
That did happen. I was accused of it, but we didn’t really do that,” says Chesney. “I actually did get on a horse, but I didn’t know it was a police horse. It didn’t have anything on it saying it was a police horse. It was a big deal at the time, but it’s funny to look back on it now. It wasn’t funny at the time.”
Here’s Kenny discussing the single “Seven Days”:
Hemingway’s Whiskey comes after some tough and maturing years for Chesney, which makes “Seven Days” particularly worth noting.
“I think everybody in his life has that one person that they can’t mentally get rid of — maybe we’re with someone romantically and emotionally even for a short time,” Chesney says. “And the character of this song, it was seven days of his life, a week. I think we all have those people and the time that we’re with them, we have no idea the impact that they’re going to have on our lives later on. And I have that person. I think that a lot of people do.”
Green wonders if we can ask who that person is.
“You can ask, but I’m not going to answer!” says Chesney.
Kenny Chesney, whose new album ‘Hemingway’s Whiskey’ (BNA Records) is out September 28th, will spend the entire day Monday, September 27th at ESPN’s studios in Bristol, CT. He’ll primarily be talking about football, the inspiration for his “Boys of Fall” documentary about the passion of football and life lessons learned on the field.
The ‘Boys of Fall,’ documentary debuted on ESPN in August and airs again on ESPN 2 on Monday, Sept 27 at 7:00 pm ET. Chesney recently told the Associated Press that making the film “ended up being one of the best journeys of my life, and I think one of the most important things I’ve done in my career to this point.” His hit single, “The Boys of Fall,” is nearing the top of singles chart.
At ESPN, Chesney will appear live on SportsCenter, Sports Nation, ESPNU, and many other shows, will tape appearances on NFL Live and CFB Live, and will do a live chat on ESPN.com. He’s always happy to talk football because, he says, “Growing up in East Tennessee, football was a way of life. In Knoxville, at the University of Tennessee, the whole town just wraps its arms around them.”
Chesney, a wide receiver in high school who is now country music’s top-drawing live act and still a Volunteers fan, says, “That’s where I first learned how to work really hard – on the football field.”
“Boys of Fall” is a football documentary about life. Executive Producer and Country Superstar, Kenny Chesney began shooting footage and football interviews for his new single “The Boys of Fall” in fall 2009. After shooting footage of friend and New Orleans Saints’ coach Sean Payton at his high school alma mater, Chesney decided to expand the video into a full documentary film. Over the next several months he filmed youth football games, high school football games & locker room speeches as well as interviews with football greats. Interviews include Troy Aikman, Bobby Bowden, Mack Brown, Tony Dungy, Brett Favre, John Madden, Peyton Manning, Joe Namath, Sean Payton, Bill Parcells, Nick Saban and Jim Tressel. After an introduction that includes Payton speaking to his old high school team in the locker room before a big game, it depicts how those who do not go on to long, storied careers in the NFL, like high school wide receiver Chesney, the lessons learned on the field help to shape who they are today.
Update – “The Boys of Fall” DVD will be longer and include bonus features. Read more.
