On Friday night in Sarasota, legendary basketball broadcaster Dick Vitale hosted his fifth annual Dick Vitale Gala to benefit cancer research. Numerous celebrities were in attendance, including Kenny Chesney.

Every year, Vitale’s event faces the daunting task of eclipsing the previous one. And every year, it manages to succeed.

Friday’s was no exception. Among the 60-plus athletes and coaches who attended, including honorees Tony Dungy, former head coach of the Bucs, and Tom Izzo, Michigan State basketball coach, two other figures helped put it over the top.

One was Hall of Fame basketball player Earvin “Magic” Johnson, who flew in late to Sarasota to present Izzo, then departed just as quickly.

The other was a surprise to many: Country singing sensation Kenny Chesney told Vitale to count on his appearance.

“He said, ‘I want to be a part of this,'” said Vitale. “‘I want to help out. I’m coming in.'”

Since the formation of the V Foundation in 1993 following the death of Jim Valvano, close to $100 million has been raised, much of it due to Vitale’s tireless efforts.

Vitale tweeted that Kenny brought his dad along, who used to coach high school basketball:

Kenny Chesney had his Dad with him as he coached HS hoops in Tenn- his Dad had fun sharing stories with Pearl -Calipari- Williams

If you’re unfamiliar with college basketball, Vitale was referring to Tennessee head coach Bruce Pearl, Kentucky head coach John Calipari, and North Carolina head coach Roy Williams.
