Chesney Delivered Chris Young the News on His First #1

posted March 15th, 2010 at 11:18 am

When Chris Young earned his first number one hit with “Gettin’ You Home (The Black Dress Song)” back in October, the person to deliver the news to him was none other than Kenny Chesney:

Just as the plane landed, he called Keith Gale, one of the promotions reps for his record label. When he answered, Keith said, “Hold on. Somebody here wants to tell you what happened this week with your single.”

“Congratulations on your first No. 1 hit,” said a familiar voice Chris couldn’t quite identify. “What a great song. I’m so proud for you and proud of you.”

The mystery voice on the phone was none other than Kenny Chesney, who’d dropped by the Sony Music Nashville office that day. When he heard the news about Chris’ single, he wanted to be the first one to congratulate him.

“Can you believe that?” Chris told me, still a little shocked that a superstar would go out of his way to tell him the news.

“Yep, Chris,” I told him. “I believe it. That’s the way it is in this town. Everybody is for everybody else. When someone hits No. 1 for writing or singing a song, there is always a brother or sister in music ready to offer congratulations. When you’re as successful as Kenny, you know to say thanks and congratulations. A man like Kenny never forgets where he came from — just a few miles up the road east of you, Chris.”

Chesney Back in the Recording Studio

Kenny Chesney’s has put the finishing touches on “Summer in 3D” and has headed back to the recording studio to work on his new album that will be out in the fall:

“It felt so good to be back in the studio,” says Chesney. “I mean, being in the studio is always such an awesome experience… because I came to town to write songs and maybe get to sing ‘em. But when you’re in the studio and you’re bringing them to life, creating the way they’re going to be heard, that’s just such a creative time – and I am blessed to work some of the very best musicians in not just Nashville, but honestly the world.”

“There are so many great songs out there, it’s hard to decide what you want to do… cause you know you’re leaving some amazing stuff on the table,” explains Kenny. “The biggest challenge is trying to decide which songs take you new places without losing site of where you’ve been, to find those moments that say something about who you are – and how your fans are living life without repeating, but also not just different for the sake of different.

“I’m lucky, because not only do I write all the time, but people pitch me songs all the time, too. I get the best of all worlds, and I’m spoiled in the music that I get to hear…”

“The thing about my schedule,” Chesney says. “It’s meant it’s been a while since the fans had new music they can put their hands on. This was the best way to get them something fresh while taking our time and enjoying making this record. If they like it half as much as we have so far, I know this next record is something they’re gonna really love.”

60,000 Fans Turn Out for Chesney in Houston

Fresh off his CMT Crossroads taping in Nashville on Tuesday, Kenny Chesney made his way to Houston, Texas Thursday night for a show at Reliant Stadium. The performance was part of the multi-day Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo.

The set list was similar to what was played at many of last year’s shows. Check it out here.

The Houston Chronicle has an article on the show:

The country superstar kicked off his Thursday set at RodeoHouston with Beer in Mexico and Keg in the Closet, tunes that had cups in the air
– alcoholic and otherwise. (It was his first show of 2010.)

This was Chesney’s first time back on the spinning stage since 2005 and his sixth overall appearance. He was backed by a band that was a little bit country, a little bit rock ‘n’ roll and anchored by a horn section.

Chesney is an energetic performer, and his songs have connected in a big way with fans. He strummed a black guitar decorated with a skull and crossbones, pacing around the stage in a faded T-shirt and tight jeans.

Chesney’s next show will be in Las Vegas on May 14th, the first of four shows scheduled at The Joint at the Hard Rock in Sin City. View the 2010 tour schedule here.

Kenny Chesney’s upcoming 3D movie “Summer In 3D” will be released in nearly every state and in several Canadian provinces.

View the theater listings here to see if your local cinema will be showing the film.

If your theater isn’t listed, you can request it be added here.

“Summer In 3D” will be in theaters April 21st – May 2nd.

The 3D footage for the movie was shot over six nights in five locations — Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Seattle, Foxboro, and Indianapolis — using a total of 22 3D camera rigs. The rigs included state-of-the-art systems from 3ality Digital, which were outfitted with Sony 1500-series professional digital cameras. 3ality Digital’s advanced, fully-automated 3D camera systems are known for their sub-pixel image alignment and ability to adjust shots dynamically, making them well-suited for live events such as concerts and sports. The high image quality also reduces time spent in post-production, making immersive, 3D filmmaking no more difficult than 2D production.

Joe Thomas, director of the film, added, “Kenny is an incredible talent, whose live shows define what the concert experience should be about. This 3D movie, its production, and the access that Kenny gave to our cameras, will give his fans an unprecedented opportunity to see, up close, the true strength of this man’s attraction to the millions that have seen him live.”
