Chesney to Release 3D Concert Movie in Theaters

We first told you about the possibility of seeing Kenny Chesney in 3D at the movie theaters back in August. On Monday details were released for the screening, which will be called “Kenny Chesney: Summer in 3D” and will be released in April 2010. Sony’s head of distribution Rory Bruer expects “Summer in 3D” to play in at least 750 theaters in April.
“I’d seen U2′s movie and was blown away,” Chesney says. “It was like something I’d never seen – and I wondered what would happen if we tried to capture some of what was going on like that. How would it look, because this is more straight up… When we did, everyone who saw the footage agreed, and we started taking this project very seriously.
“Then when major movie studios were interested in working with us… a company with such specialized expertise as not just Sony Pictures Entertainment, which is crazy, but their Hot Ticket division which understands very specifically the challenges of a 3D movie, well, we went for it.”
The footage was shot over six nights in five cities: Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Seattle, Boston, and Indianapolis, and involved 22 specialized 3D cameras.
“It’s crazy how up close this puts you,” adds Chesney. “To me on that stage I feel every single one of my fans, all the way to the very top of those stadiums. But this is like having everyone right there onstage with us, and it’s a rush. I had no idea what we do could go to film quite like that.
“It was an amazing – and at times scary – experience to have cameras that close, in the air, on a blimp. cause they are everywhere. But to see what this film captures: all the energy, the thrill and an even better focus on some of the most rocking nights we’ve ever had, all I can say is… wow.”
Speculation was rampant over the summer as concert-goers reported seeing signs that said the concert was being recorded. We reported on the speculation here and here. And also in August before the Gillette Stadium show about 100 fans took part in filming of the opening sequence for the film. In an email to those chosen to participate it was referred to as “KC3D Opening Title Sequence”.
So the speculation is over and now we now what’s coming in the spring. The only question is, will Summer In 3D be in a theater near you?

Smart. This is how he can do only 10 shows next summer. He ought to TEACH marketing!
I hope that this movie comes out in movie theatres and on DVD because i sure do want to see this movie in 3-D.Kenny Chesney says that he is excited about this movie and he wants everyone to see this movie.Kenny gave me this message
last night on my myspace page and all over the web.I will accept kenny’s message and see this movie in April,2010.And thank you Josh for putting this out on ChesneyWorld.
I bet DVD sales will be a lot bigger than the movie theater sales. I don’t think Buffett has ever released a concert video in the theaters but he has a slough of great selling DVDs.
I agree. Great marketing!
Cheers.
