Kenny Chesney debuted a new song at this year’s Keg In The Closet shows called “Out Last Night.” In a release on his website, Kenny discusses how it came about:
Vacationing on his boat somewhere in the Caribbean with a mix of songwriter friends and locals, Kenny Chesney found himself crawling home on morning with Brett James – and laughing about the carnage, remarked “Well, I guess we went out last night.”
Never one to miss a moment of spontaneous inspiration, the pair set to capturing the moment over a percolating beat – and the ensuing “Out Last Night” was born in a few hours and a whole lot of laughs. So infectious was its vibe that the song – debuted with lyric sheets and bumpy patches on the seminal RCA (now Sony Music Nashville) Boat Show at this year’s Country Radio Seminar – is set to be the first single from Chesney’s second Greatest Hits collection.
“Sometimes you just know when you’ve got one,” admits the man who got his start writing songs for Acuff Rose, the same publishing house that was home to Hank Williams Sr. “We both knew it was everything having one of those nights is made of – and the more we wrote, the more we laughed and the more we laughed, the more we knew as bad as we felt, we were gonna do it all again that very night.”
With an opening declaration of “We went out last night/ Like we said we wouldn’t do/ Drank too much beer last night/ A lot more than we wanted to…,” the effervescent mid-tempo song captures the way just another night can turn into a real good time without a whole lot of drama or a big fancy party. For Chesney, it is recognizing the joy in where you are, the opportunity to have fun in the moment that has always defined his music and helped him become the single largest ticket-seller in any genre of the 21st century.
“I think people have so much heavy stuff to deal with,” allows the 4-consecutive and reigning Academy of Country Music and 4-time and current Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year. “You can get so lost in all of that, that you miss the little things that make life worth living. And I believe we have a choice: we can drown in the bad stuff, or we can figure out how to laugh a little bit.
“Sometimes it’s as simple as just hanging out with your buddies somewhere. That’s what the song is about. Not anything more than just that… and yet, when things are bad, talking about sports, flirting with the girls, not doing much of anything can sure make you feel a whole lot better for a little while – and that can make everything a whole easier to shoulder.”
“Out Last Night” will appear on Kenny’s upcoming Greatest Hits Volume Two, which is set for release on May 19th. It will likely be the next single, considering he’s been filming a music video for it.
